New Chairs

Not sure if I mentioned this, but I lucked out and won an upholstered bench from Tina at The Enchanted Home back in May (on my birthday in fact)!  Long story short . . . the bench was backordered so I decided to use the credit towards this pair of chairs for my living room.  And last week the long awaited chairs finally arrived!  I will say, it has been a long wait, but well worth it.

Here's a sneak peek.

These divine chairs are from Safavieh and they could not have been nicer during the process.

I'll show you pictures of the entire room soon.  I still have a few other things to do in there before it's complete.  The lesson here - Tina does some amazing giveaways and does them often.  So, you really need to go see her and become a follower of The Enchanted Home. Thanks again, Tina!!
 Free is good, people.  M.

Almost 1 Year....

I started blogging in september last year...not knowing what to expect. Sometimes I wish I had a little bit more time to share things with all of you but the days are really too short and I lack an extra pair of hands....
Today I would like to take the time to thank all of my followers and visitors from all over the world for all the nice compliments I received for my blog....It makes me very, very happy although I must not forget to mention that Greet of te lovely Belgian Pearls -blog introduced me to this world in the article where she refered to my blog....A whole new world opened for me. So great thanks to her ! She' s a lovely lady....

We even got the visit of a lovely lady with her mother from Italy-Como and a lovely couple from Dusseldorf....They came especially to our shop: isn't that incredible?? We also received many, many phonecalls & e-mails...unfortunately I must say that we didn't find the time yet to answer them all....
At the moment the work for our projects takes all our time and between 14 pm and 18 pm we have to be present in our showroom to receive  new clients.... So I would like to apologize for not answering all the mails....

Never the less it makes us very, very  humble and thankfull because we worked both so hard for several years....We always stayed true to our style and always believed that that is the best way to run a business....
THANKS

Those Extra Little Touches Add Up

I recently surfed across this picture; and although the blogger was discussing something totally different about the image, I stopped in my tracks on how the mirror was hung.

So, I starting thinking . . . this would work in so many different places where you want the artwork to have more impact.

Look at this divine example.
Hard to tell, but I think it's actually hanging from the frame of the mirror.

I love the layered look in this image on a wall of mirrors.

Hard to tell from this one, but I think the small starburst mirror is actually suspended from chain on all four sides.

I think the chain adds tons of interest to an otherwise basic artwork installation.

Another fabulous example of this idea - a mirror on a mirror.

Well, needless to say, I was smitten with the idea; and since it is such an inexpensive detail, I had to have my own!

Here's the Before . . . (sorry for the glare, you know I am not a photographer).  This is a wall in my living room that  has never really seemed "finished" to me.  Sort of feels like you need  a piece of furniture underneath the artwork.

And the After . . .

It was such an easy DIY project - took all of about 25 minutes.  And now it feels like gallery artwork and the wall feels "finished."
This is all I have time for today. But promise, later this week, to post a tutorial on how to do this and where to find the materials to make it happen in your house!  Have a great day. M.

Random Obsession

When I was a kid, I loved school supplies.  I totally got into going with my Mom to pick out my pens and pencils, the perfect binder, and especially the covers of all the spiral bound notebooks for each subject.  It was the only thing that excited me about the idea of going back to school each fall.  One year I specifically remember digging through the bin of notebooks to unearth the very last notebook with a headshot of Leif Garrett on the front.  Totally felt like I had won the lottery - girls asking me where I got it.  The whole nine yards. (If you are wondering what happen to Leif, it is a sad sad story - google him if you don't believe me.)

Well, yesterday I realized (as if I didn't know) that my obsession is alive and well.  This is what was waiting for me on the porch outside our bedroom when I got home!!!!

This little box . . . I have been anxiously awaiting.

I read a post earlier this week from Janell of Isabella & Max doing the same thing over a box of gorgeous wallpaper (which, come to think of it, would have the same effect on me since it's paper).

When I glanced over and saw the package, I tried to calmly walked to the door to retrieve it. You can imagine the anticipation of having to photograph the box before getting to open it.

Inside I saw this!
Do you see that sweet orange and cream string around the box?!

These are my brand new business cards for my interior design company!! I decided to go with an oversized square card.  Mainly because the oh so clever Megan of Toast & Laurel suggested it.  With this design, the cards serve double duty as binder cards for my design plans too.

Here's a close up of the front of each card (sorry for the grainy pictures, the lighting was horrible so I had to lighten them up thus sacrificing on the clarity).

So, my fetish was throughly fed with this sublime prize!!
If you are into paper, it will do your heart good to go visit Megan and check out her offerings.

Have a wonderful weekend.  M.

House Bling - Ring my Bell

It's the little details that create a fantastic first impression. Why not update your doorbell plate and add some character to your front entrance.

Not into the electric version?  How about a good ole fashion knocker . . .

This one even has a cool peep door.

Also, I think a large collection of door knockers on a wall in your home would make the most interesting art installation.  There would be a story behind every single one!

The example below can be customized with your name in the large center area, or left plain for a sleek simple look.

This one is the bomb!  I can see it on a modern style home that includes lots of traditional touches inside.

Talk about a modern take.

My husband has an Aunt who has this twist style at her house.  When we go to visit, my kids wear it out.  I keep thinking they'll grow out of the urge, but at 11 and 9 yrs old, it hasn't happened yet.   It must make her crazy, but she never lets on.
The twist style so charming and vintage (at least when we're not in town)!

And if you have a beach house . . .

Or a mountain house . . .

Space Savers

It seems we are all trying to live more efficiently in our homes.  With the economy still below it's norm of a few years ago, I think it's so smart to use your space effectively.  Here are several tricks to provide great storage while not sacrificing on style.

Bedside Shelf
I've completed a couple of design jobs as of late for homes with very efficient bedrooms.  This seems to be a trend in new construction.  And it makes sense - after all, we are (hopefully) asleep the majority of the time we are in these rooms.

In a tight bedroom, one idea I love is using a shelf mounted to the wall as a bedside table.  They have clean lines and work in spots where an ordinary bedside table might not work.

Also, since shelving is available almost everywhere, it's easy to find a style that compliments your specific taste.

Notice the sleek modern vibe of this one (coupled with my second space saving trick - a swing arm lamp which I am discussing next).

This is a great example of how a shelf can make a small space feel visually larger while not compromising on storage.  Side note: at first glance the bedding below reminds me of Schumacher's  Betwixt Fabric which I love.

Remember, you don't have to place the shelf on the same wall as the headboard.  In this example, they have made great use of a tiny spot!

Swing Arm Lamps
When you have a bedroom that is a bit larger than the one mentioned above and you are able to fit in a shallow bedside table, you don't want the entire table to be taken up with a lamp base.  So, swing arm lamps are the perfect solution.

These allow you to use the bedside table for necessary items while not compromising on lighting.

Multi-Functional Furnishings
Simple Idea, but it's just not used as often as you think.  When you are limited on space, each piece you select should be well thought out and should always play at least a dual role(if not triple role). You want the space to look pretty but also function for your needs.  Side Note: The ability to make this trick work also relies heavily on the functionality of the furniture layout of your space.

Here are just a few examples of this concept.

This clever homeowner has placed a dresser next to the bed so it's working as a bedside table and dresser for storing clothes.  Super smart when you are short on space.

It's a bar. It's a place to store blankets.  It's an accent chest.  All rolled into one!  Not sure where this piece is located in the home, but if it were by the front door it would even be a entryway table (with the mirror) for a last minute "makeup check" before leaving for the day! (sorry this picture is so grainy, but hopefully you get the idea).

This is actually a photograph from a catalog.  But it's such clever styling, I had to include it.  By using this piece as a sofa table, you create a spot for extra books while providing a table top for a few pretty accessories.

Here's an armoire placed in a dining room.  It's being used as a bar, as glassware storage and for table linens below.  Keeps everything at your fingertips for setting a pretty table and for an after dinner libation.
Go Vertical
This is super great in older homes with those amazing high ceilings.  Remember: the space above you head is a major commodity and should not be overlooked.

I love this image.  The built-ins create a wonderful niche for the bed while taking advantage of the wall space for storage.  Also notice the "ledge style" headboard acting as a bedside table.  I am also totally digging those pillows with the blue trim and the chocolate walls (and the mirrors on the doors).  It's all good, people.

Great idea for all the space above your bed (not to mention the under the bed storage).

Built-ins also are an easy way to take advantage of vertical space.

This example is taking advantage of a corner when usually this space goes untouched.

Clutter is a No No
This one sounds so obvious; yet I continue to transform small spaces by simply editing accessories and unnecessary items from the room.  My clients think I have worked a miracle when really I just de-cluttered.

This is a beautifully appointed room with a clean de-cluttered look.

Another image of a multipurpose space that is clean without any unnecessary accessories.

Find Unused Space
(wherever it may be)
Many times we have more space than we realize.  There are so many spots that are easily adapted if you take the time to consider them.

One of the most common examples which I know many of you have seen time and time again is the space under a staircase.  You're crazy not to take advantage of it.
source

But have you seen this . . .

This is such a smart solution for the space that is near the bottom of the stairwell.  How great is this when you don't want to take your kids shoes up to their rooms for the 100th time?

For a bathroom short on space, this is a simple idea (now granted, the items you place here will have to be styled or it will look terrible), but still a spot you might not ordinarily think about.

OK, you're probably wondering why I included the picture below.
One question:  Would you think to fill up the entire space between the bed and the wall on the right or would you use a traditional bedside table and have all that dead space in the corner?

Look at this clever shelf for bedside books.

There is space inside that low privacy wall, if you think to access it.

Everybody knows a trundle bed is a great space saver, but . . .

Have you ever thought about a deeper headboard for storage?

For a basement pantry, if your stairwell is wide enough to accommodate shelving, why not?!

Think about the space between the studs in a wall.  They do it with traditional medicine cabinets all the time.  Why not translate this to the kitchen in the form of a spice rack behind a painting.

OK, I admit this is a bit unusual, but who knew?!

Lastly, I think this one is my favorite -  such a great idea and so pretty too.
Do you have a small rise under your kitchen cabinets?!

Enjoy your day! M.
