Giving Thanks

Here's wishing all of you a wonderful Thanksgiving.  I'm signing off a bit early this week to finish up some design projects and spend some quality time with my family.

I would encourage you to take some time this week to think about what you are thankful for in your life.  Although I rarely mention it here, my number one blessing is my faith in Jesus Christ.  It sustains me like nothing else can.  Without it, I would not be the person I am today.

So this year, focus on your blessings, it will do you more good than you know!  At the very least, all that positive energy might just rub off on others around you who need a little pick me up this time of year.

Happy Turkey Day.  M.

The Weekend

On Friday night the kids were away, so we decided to stay in.  It's so rare we have a date night in our own house.  Since no one was screaming, begging, pleading for food, we decided to have a late dinner outside.  If you have ever been to Birmingham in late July, you know the later the better.

These zinnias have almost faded, but I still thought they would be nice on the table.  I wish we had zinnias in our own garden - these are from a very sweet friend whose garden is bursting with them at the moment.  They also seem to last an incredibly long time once cut.

Notice the ice cubes in my wine - it's hot here people! And no, that is not a second bottle of wine - it's this incredibly yummy organic olive oil for dipping your bread.

I served a lemon grilled chicken with melted heirloom tomatoes and orzo and crusty french bread.  I topped it all off with some parm grated on a microplane.

When we make time to enjoy an evening like this, I always think, "why don't we do this more often?"  It's really not that difficult to make a meal special even when you are not expecting guests.  I think we just get so caught up in our routine we forget to stop and breathe.

It was so relaxing time slipped away; and before we knew it, the evening had faded into night.
Savor the summer season and make some plans for an evening at home.

PS: I just got an email that the new issue of Adore Home Magazine is out!  I have not had a chance to take a peek yet, but I will be making time to do so!  Click here to see for a look see - Adore Magazine   M.

Place Settings

In our dining room, we have an oval table (or round when you remove the two center leaves).  I was thrilled when we first got it.  But after a couple of months, I found I didn't like the table when it was set for dinner.  It just didn't look right to me, but I couldn't put my finger on the reason.

Sometime later, I attended a luncheon at a friend's house who had an oval table.  When I walked into her dining room, I gasped at how beautiful her table looked with the place settings.  Midway through the meal I had an "ah hah" moment.  She had round placemats.  This allowed her to adjust the angle of the place settings to accommodate the curve in the table.

This one change had a huge impact - it was the difference between night and day.  So, that afternoon, I went out and bought a set of basic round place mats.  Like these.

A few of you have asked about this ruffled placemat I used on my Easter table this year.

I did buy them with the ruffled edge, and no they were not expensive.  Yes they are woven (not linen) and they are easy to clean.  I take a small brush (you can find this in the cleaning section of the grocery) and gently scrub with soap and water to remove any stains.  Here is a source for them if you are interested!

As usual, I couldn't stop once I found a source for the ruffled version.  There are lots of options out there for round placements.  Check out these finds!

These would be a wonderful way to dress down the table.

Similar to my ruffled version, these are a bit more casual and not as girly.

Dying over these capiz shell mats.  They would be an investment.

You could get a similar look with this less expensive version.  But, of course, I like the first ones better.

Although this one is a charger rather than a placement, I had to show it to you.  It is stunning and would make the most beautiful formal place setting.

Those were my favorites for this shopping excursion!  If you have an oval or round table, consider a round placemat for your next party. M.

Weekend Wrap Up

I had a wonderful Easter weekend.  We celebrated with my husband's family (well, at least some of his family).   Here are a few pictures.
Advanced apology -  I have a busy day, so this post is mainly pictures without many explanations.

This is our breakfast room table and these were the left over flowers I threw together for a quick arrangement.

These are pictures from my dining room.  We had a total of 11 for lunch and it was a ton of fun!
The foil bunnies are not real (they are made to look like chocolate bunnies, and fooled a few people at the table)!

I decided to make the meal a little more special by using place cards and came up with these.  When I have a bit more time, I'll show you how easy they are to make.

I hope you had a great weekend and are ready to get your week off to a great start.  I can't believe we are only one week away from May!!!! M.

Happy Easter Weekend

Whether you are spending the weekend at home with just your closest friends and family or you're traveling to be with extended family, I hope you have a wonderful time.  Here is a little sweet treat from me to you.
